(Oh, in case you&#8217;re wondering: in the beginning of Vintrospektiv, I was looking for regular things to post and so I researched random dates to do with video games, like publication dates, birthdays, and so on. I&#8217;ve written about the probable accuracy of these dates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/index.php\/2024\/01\/archive-why-dates-in-retrogaming-are-problematic\/\">before<\/a>, but Tim Follin&#8217;s birthday is featured on so many sites I&#8217;d imagine he would correct it at some point if it were wrong \u2013 especially since I&#8217;m not the only one who wrote a 50<sup>th<\/sup>-birthday post.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the last article on this blog that was still missing an English translation (with the exception of the first &#8220;this month in retrogaming&#8221; overviews that were probably very inaccurate, see above, and will therefore remain untranslated), so here it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Happy 50<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, Tim Follin!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A late entrant into the world of computer game music (first Spectrum game <em>Subterranean Stryker<\/em>&nbsp;in 1985, first C64 game <em>Agent X II<\/em>&nbsp;in 1987), Tim Follin experimented a lot with the possibilities of the sound chips he was working with, and introduced jazz and rock elements into a scene that was otherwise shaped by classical and early electronic music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qONN-YvJYZg\">music for <em>Agent X II<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;on the Spectrum is still regarded with awe as it was only possible with the help of a number of programming tricks. He continued creating unique sound effects and instruments, for instance in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wz36JWHTk-A\">music for&nbsp;<em>Ghouls \u2018n Ghosts<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;on the C64 (which he considers his best work on that machine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"264\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Agent_X_II_Inlay.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Agent_X_II_Inlay.jpg 264w, https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Agent_X_II_Inlay-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His soundtrack for&nbsp;<em>Plok<\/em>&nbsp;on the Super NES is based on samples of contemporary synthesizers (M1 and Wavestation by Korg) and real guitars. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gz0fAz9n_Os&amp;list=PL2A1A350EBB242BDF&amp;index=11\">beach\/sea level<\/a>&nbsp;is a good example for the idiosyncratic mixture of New Age, Easy Listening and rock music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"381\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Plokbox.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Plokbox.jpg 381w, https:\/\/www.vintrospektiv.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Plokbox-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After composing the music for more than 50 games on a dozen systems, he withdrew from computer game music in 2006, disappointed after realising that his work was increasibly based on speculation and often paid extremely late or not at all when delays occurred (sometimes over several years) or development was cancelled early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015 he returned with his self-produced game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/139513174\/contradiction\"><em>Contradiction: Spot the Liar!<\/em><\/a>, financed through a Kickstarter campaign, that received generally positive reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GST Channel has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GC1dTzyb5Gs\">fantastic video<\/a>&nbsp;on YouTube that can be wholeheartedly recommended to anyone interested in Tim&#8217;s musical development and his methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">(The picture of Tim Follin was taken from an interview in the programme <em>Re:Loaded<\/em> by Channel M.
