My first scholarly article: control mechanisms in computer and video games

My first scholarly article has finally come out! It’s called “Press ( ) to jump”: control mechanisms in computer and video games and is meant to be a definitive overview of control mechanisms in games and a starting point for more thorough research.

The magazine, Paidia, is usually in German, but they feature the odd English article and were happy to take this one in its English original form.

I originally wrote it with a specific publisher in mind, but it turned out that it was not suited for the specific content they expected. Since there are only limited publishing possibilities for non-scholars, that meant I had to go on an extended search for a new home that eventually ended with finding reasonable enthusiasm at Paidia.

You might be aware that publishing in the academic world involves extensive editing and this was no exception. Especially adapting the formatting to the needs of this internet magazine took a lot of time. I first mentioned that I had finished the article almost one and a half years ago, to give you a rough idea (though in all fairness, I should mention that there was also some measure of procrastination).

In any case, if you are interested in the history of gaming or in gaming itself from a technical perspective, then maybe check it out.
